Alexa Gilker
Alexa Gilker is a screenwriter and playwright currently based out of Calgary, Canada. Her interest in film and theatre focuses on creating narratives, often from the perspective of women, that attempt to source truth in storytelling. Alexa co-founded Beautiful Obedient Productions.
Since completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Alexa has written and produced two short films, Chokecherry and A Proposed Solution, had two plays premiere in Canada, and works as a freelance screenwriter for international commissions. She currently owns and operates her own business, Whitespace Writers, teaching and inspiring creative writing workshops.
Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Sandi immigrated to Canada and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria. Sandi has worked as a director and producer in Film and Theatre with credits including ChokeCherry (Female Eye Film Festival, Director), Bardo Light (TIFF, Co-Producer), and The Good Story (SummerWorks, Director).
Sandi’s work is fuelled by the belief that there is a great importance in focussing on a female lens in our storytelling. There is both a misrepresentation and an underrepresentation of females at the forefront of our stories. The way in which women view the world is different and the way in which we are perceived is an important narrative to share. Recurrent themes for her work centre around telling female stories as well as stories of outsiders in a new world.
